I'm Liz Liano, and today we're going to be talking to Mazie Japel.

Welcome, Mazie, and congratulations on being one of the Mayor's Top Teens.

Thank you so much.

It's great to have you here.

So, want to hear a little bit about you and some of the things you're doing at school and some of your activities.

Cool, do you want me to like just list them off?

Yeah so what are some of your school activities or extracurriculars?

I'm involved in my school's orchestra.

I play viola.

I'm involved in the theater program, doing a lot of technical stuff.

I'm vice president of both Mock Trial and NHS, which are both very involved, activities.

I'm trying to think if there's anything else, but I think, yeah, that's it.

Cool, and how do you enjoy orchestra?

Oh, I love it.

It's like just being.

I love the group that we're like, with.

And I love my instrument.

And I love being able to, like, produce music and be like, that kind of creative aspect is really, I love it.

It's awesome.

That's wonderful.

And then you also said theater.

You do technical stuff.

Yes.

So what do you do exactly?

The last couple shows I was involved with, which was Little Mermaid and, Disaster Musical, I directed both of them.

Which was really cool because I got to work with every single little aspect of, like, theater.

And I've done lights before, spotlight.

Like stagehand work.

It's it's all awesome.

It's great.

Yes.

Wonderful, you sound very passionate about that.

And what else you said, theater, orchestra.

Mock trial.

Mock trial.

And what does that entail?

We prepare a case, and then we take it to regionals, where we, can qualify for state.

We didn't qualify for state, but, Yeah, I was an attorney, and that was a really fun experience.

That's so cool.

So do you do anything outside of school, like community service or anything?

Yeah.

Through NHS, we do a lot of community service work.

Actually, we did the dress a child around the holidays and a couple other things.

I'm trying to think there was a mental health walk earlier that I, helped out with that.

And yeah, that kind of a lot of stuff through NHS.

Very nice.

So you mentioned what what is the dress the child?

It's where you walk with a, like there's people take their children, and so like I think it was Kholes where, an then we like walks around with them and help them pick out clothes and we at like tallied up the like money and made sure everything was like squared away and helped out with that.

It was really it was a good experience being able to like meet all the kids and like help out families and stuff.

Oh, it's so sweet.

Yes, it was fun.

So what do you want to end up studying?

I want to go into biology.

I was thinking, agriculture bio, which, like studying plants and pesticides and just like, all the, like, scientific aspects of, like how agriculture, like the stuff that, like, helps agriculture, like propel forward and stuff like that.

But I also I'm torn between that and going into like biochemical engineering which is a very like, it's a very, involved, field of study where you can like, it's very hands on and you can like, like go into an internship very fast.

And that's kind of very interesting to me.

but yeah, I've always been, like, super fascinated by animals and insects and things like that.

Biology is basically that.

Wonderful.

Well, that sounds like it'll be, you sound very passionate about it.

And where do you want to study that?

I'm going to NMSU in the fall, which they have.

We have an amazing, like, bio program here.

So, yeah, I'd be pretty set up.

Wonderful, well, it's been, delightful hearing about all of your activities and all of your passions and interests.
